Rick Duchane: That's a very broad subject, ranging from the scholastic philosophies of Duns Scotus and Thomas Aquinas to the modern philosophies of Teilhard de Chardin and Karl Rahner. I suppose at its most basic, the practical Catholic philosophy says that the physical world is real, although it is not the full extent of reality. But all reality is comprehensible to the human mind, through observation and logic. Rene Descartes is famous for his line of reasoning from the basic "I doubt, therefore I exist," to the reliability of human senses, and ultimately to the existence of a benevolent God. Subsequent philosophers have taken that argument apart, but as Catholics, they agree that there is a moral direction to the world, and that our benevolence and compassion toward our fellow humans, particularly those least able to help themselves, is existentially important....Show more
