Real classics? Then go for philosophy. You will cover American and World Literature in a philosophy degree and in addition you'll get a degree that gives you lots of options to fall back on during the lean years of becoming a published author which, usually takes a bit of time. Philosophy degrees can be the doorway to work in humanities, journalism (good for an author), law, education, public service, the list goes on and on.
