Giovanna Sherlin: DENTAL ASSISTANTS are typically responsible for the following tasks: * Working closely with patients before, during and after procedures * Assisting the dentist during a variety of treatment procedures * Taking and developing x-rays * Preparing and sterilizing instruments and equipment * Taking impressions of patients' teeth for study casts (models of teeth) * Teaching patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies * Performing office managementMost dental assisting programs last between 9 and 11 months, leading to a certificate or diploma.Dental Assistant salaries range from $31,568 to $42,245 Depending. DENTAL HYGIENISTS perform a wide range of services, primar! ily in preventative oral health care. They share some of the same duties as dental assistants, such as creating molds and taking x-rays. In addition, a dental hygienist often performs the following types of tasks: * Collecting information about the patient's oral and medical health history * Removing calculus, stains and plaque (hard and soft deposits) from all surfaces of the teeth * Making molds of patients' teeth used for evaluating treatment * Charting patientsâ dental conditions for the dentist * Applying fluorides and decay preventatives * Administering local anesthetics * Removing sutures and dressingsAlthough the earning potential is greater, a dental hygienist education requires a 2- to 4-year associateâs or bachelorâs degree in dental hygiene. Some dental hygienists may also pursue a masterâs degreeDental hygienist salaries range from $52,260 to $69,881 Depending....Show more
Lino Cawthorne: No they ar! e NOT the same.A dental assistant can be trained on the job OR! they can go to a training school or college and get a 1 year certificate in DA. They can then take a national written test to become a certified DA.A DA ASSISTS the dentist. They hand instruments to the dentist (sit by his/her side) and they sterilize instruments and clean up the rooms after patients. They can also take xrays of the patient's teeth IF they are certified assistants. They make anywhere from 10 to 25 dollars per hour. Average is about 12-18 an hour.A dental hygienist is a LICENSED college educated dental professional. They cant be trained on the job. A hygienist used to be called dental nurse. It is the same as being a nurse, except for the dental field. They have to attend a college that teaches dental hygiene and is approved by the American Dental Association (ADA). A hygienist can work in private practices or for government programs or the military treating soliders mouths. A hygienist can get a 2 year associates degree to work in private practices or the ! military. OR they can get a 4 year bachelors degree to work for public health for the government or private practices.Really only a 2 year degree is needed and most get only a 2 year degree. It is a highly competitive program to get into so many have other college degrees by the time they get into a program. The average age of a hygiene student is about age 27. But most students are 25 to 45 in age range. The pay for a hygienist is 25 to 45 per hour. Average is about 30 something depending on what part of the country you are in. Basically if you live in a busy, wealthy area then a hygienist makes 33+ per hour.Hygienists never sit by the dentist's side unless the dentist does not have any assistants in the office (which is rare. Assistants know assistant and hygienists are more independent practioners).Hygienists clean teeth, place sealants on kids teeth, place temporary crowns, in some states can administer local anesthesia to patients, and check on the patient's overall mou! th status. They work alone, closely with patients and only get the dent! ist to double check the patient's mouth and the dentist does any dental work that is needed. An assistant never works alone on a patient's mouth (except xrays. Certified ones can take xrays). But an assistant would never pick up an instrument and use it on a patient. There are 2 exceptions: there are 2 states one is TX and alabama i think. In those 2 states the board of dentistry is now allowing assistants (some trained on the job which is scary!) to do more work of a hygienist. If your state tries to pass a bill allowing assistants to do the work of a hygienist you should fight against the bill because assistants are NOT hygienists. They do not hold an associates or bachelors degree in anything dental! A person is only as good as their training. And having untrained people is dangerous....Show more
Star Gollnick: No. Hygienist get a college degree. Assistants only require some special training from a trade school or a small course at a junior college. Starting pay for ! an assistant is about $9.00 per hour. You can complete college courses and make about $18.00 per hour for a hygienist. It also depends on what state you live in. I know if you live out on the west you can make alot more. I live in Texas and heard from a friend that lives in Nevada that she makes about $7.00 more than I do.We have both been assistants for 9 years....Show more
