Hubert Jestes: Machado-joseph disease or SCA-3 is characterized by a slow progressive loss of co-ordination of all of your muscles beginning with the loss of sensation in your feet and lower legs and a "stumbling gait" that progresses to becoming wheel chair bound. Double-vision is also a problem. Hand coordination is also compromised. In the last stages of the disease, one loses the ability to breath.
